Our detailed and eventful history
Die WEISSE is Austria's oldest wheat beer brewery and the only historical small beer brewery in Austria still in operation. The Salzburg Weissbierbrauerei was founded by Adelbert Behr in the Rupertgasse street in Schallmoos in Salzburg in 1901. The German-born brewer, adventurer, and big game hunter erected a wheat beer brewery in the backyard of his inn in Schallmoos. At that time, there were still 50 breweries in Salzburg producing strong bock beers.
Behr brewed a light, amber-colored wheat beer with a fruity aroma and a fine white foam. Thanks to the traditional recipe, the appearance, taste and aroma of the beer have remained unchanged to this day.
After having seen various brewery operators, the Weissbierbrauerei property was acquired by Hans Georg Gmachl, father of the current brewer Felix Gmachl, in 1987. During 25 years of construction and reconstruction, the more than 100-year-old small craft brewery was made fit and viable for the new millennium.
In 2001 and 2002, the new brewhouse with a malt storage facility and a fermentation cellar was built underneath the garden. In addition to the popular inn, the music bar Sudwerk was opened.
